"Courriel"

France's Culture Ministry decreed a ban on the use of "e-mail" in government documents, publications and Web sites. E-mail, despite being a universally used and understood English term, is not good enough for the French. It rolls too easily of the lips without the distorted facial expressions necessary to correctly pronounce "true" French words. It is therefore banned! Etymology: The term is an amalgamation of "courrier électronique" - electronic courrier. Anglophiles have no fear of using terms like "courrier" as long as they are not required to pronounce them with an effeminate affection. Le courriel est le
service internet le plus utilisé. Would the term courriélec be preferable to courriel? The Quebec French Language Office mentions this possibility. They also explain why courriel cannot be written with the accent mark of électronique (rendered as courriél ) It's simple folks. The suffix -iél does not exist in French and it would be more difficult to pronounce. Almost as hard as E-mail. Now what are they going to do with Voice-mail? http://w3.olf.gouv.qc.ca/terminologie/fiches/8872617.htm
